Back to A Note From Carol

This activity can be done just for fun or could be part of a holiday program performance. Each student will need one candle puppet. You will need one toilet paper tube and one popsicle stick for each child and some colored tissue paper. You’ll want to cut about an inch off of each tube before you give them to your students. You can easily cut tubes with a paper cutter or a pair of scissors. Your students can either paint the paper tubes, cover them with craft paper or cover them with a piece of peel & stick WonderFoam. Have them glue some scraps of colored tissue paper to one end of a popsicle stick to create a "flame." To "light" the candle, a child just pushes the popsicle stick up inside of the cardboard tube. This puppet can be used as a prop for Raffi’s song "This Little Light of Mine" which can be found on his Rise and Shine cd. Each time Raffi sings the line "I’m going to let it shine", the children should "light" their candles. When he sings "I won’t let anyone blow it out" they should pull the flame down inside of the candle. Here are some candle celebration stories to share with your students:
