Dynamic Dominoes

If you are looking for a fun way for your child to practice his/her basic addition facts you'll want to share the book Domino Addition by Lynette Long with him/her. This book turns learning to add into a game by showing how to count the spots on each half of the domino and total them up. On alternate pages we are shown a collection of dominoes and asked to find the ones that have a specific number of spots. The sums that can be created with a set of double six dominoes are illustrated on the back pages of the book.

I have created a set of summer theme double six dominoes for you to print out and use with your child. They are in a frame at the bottom of the page.  Use these dominoes as manipulatives when you read Domino Addition together.

Here are some other ways to use dominoes to practice addition facts...

~Add up the spots "pips" on each domino and sort them by names for 6, 9, etc.

~Turn the dominoes face down. Choose one domino to be the "leader." Count the spots on that domino. Now take each of the other dominoes, count their spots and decide if there totals are more, less, or the same as the number of spots on the "leader."

~Take each domino and arrange them from names for 0 all the way up to names for 12. (Example 3 spots + 2 spots is a name for 5.)

~Count up the number of spots on each domino and sort the totals into piles of even or odd numbers.

~Place the dominos face down in the middle of the table. Have each player draw a domino and count the spots on his domino. Player with the highest total wins that round, takes the dominos used in that round and places them next to him. Continue to play until there are no dominoes remaining in the center of the table. Player with most dominoes wins the game.
