Mother Kangaroo and Joey
By Carol Hartery
The minute I saw the new SE Kangaroo and Joey note pads I thought of one of my favorite stories, Katy No Pocket by Emmy Payne. In the book Katy Kangaroo is different from all of the other mother kangaroos because she doesn't have a pocket for her baby. She asks other mother animals how they carry their children. She decides their ways won't work for her and that she must have a pocket. A wise owl tells her to go to the city to look for a pocket. Katy meets a carpenter who is wearing an apron that is covered with pockets. The carpenter gives Katy his apron and when she returns home she has a place for her joey and pockets for the other baby animals too.
In the MA language standards we are asked to have students compare and contrast nonfiction and fiction books. You may want to share one of the nonfiction Kangaroo books that we carry in the store with your students and have them compare Katy No Pocket to the nonfiction book.

You can gear the activity I created for the kangaroo note pads to many of the skills that your students need. Your students will match the joey to his mother. Maybe the joey will have a lowercase letter on him and his mother will have the corresponding uppercase letter on him. Maybe the joey will have a numeral on him and his mother will have the corresponding quantity of stickers on her. Think of rhyming pictures, opposites, initial consonant and picture that represents that sound.
