   About Us, Mission, History, Bio's

Mission

The Learning Tree Store, a division of Ed Venture, Inc. supports educators with outstanding products, training, information and leadership.

History

The Learning Tree Store was established in 1987 with retail stores located in Danvers and Stoneham, MA. The Learning Tree Store, Danvers, MA was opened in 1987 by Virginia Mullahy and Jan Plourde. With the help of family and friends, The Learning Tree Store grew gradually over the years to become the North Shore’s premier parent teacher store.

In 1992, the partnership was purchased by Jan and Herb Plourde. Together, they opened The Learning Tree Store in Stoneham in 1995, and now operate two stores. At that time, The Learning Tree Store became an approved professional development point provider (PDP) with teacher training facilities in both locations. The store has since gained a reputation for an outstanding selection of teaching and learning products, as well as excellence in providing teacher training with on-site classrooms in both stores.

In order to meet the needs of the community and the changing field of education, The Learning Tree Store proudly offers graduate level courses in association with area colleges and consortiums from early childhood to the high school levels. The Learning Tree Store is recognized nationally for its leadership in the field of teacher training, educational expertise, its publications and website, tltree.com.

As an off-shoot of the on-site teacher workshops, this small business was a catalyst for organizing the first Four College Conference as a collaborative of Endicott, Gordon, North Shore Community and Salem State Colleges’ education departments.

While "No Child Left Behind" policies altered the world of teacher conferences radically, The Four College Conference adjusted to the needs of the time, and evolved into the annual Legacy of Teaching Institute for Early Childhood Educators. The Legacy of Teaching Institute is made up of an all-volunteer committee of dedicated area teachers who bring outstanding contributions to the field of early childhood education.

As the company approaches its 22nd anniversary, The Learning Tree Store will continue it's commitment to offering the best in the field to parents, teachers and other education professionals through its stores, online presence and global thinking. The Learning Tree Store works closely with area schools, organizations and community efforts to help make the world a greener place.

The Learning Tree Store continues its long time tradition, in the annual summer tent sale, where items that do not have enough sales history are marked down for bargains that are truly amazing. People often ask what happens to the stuff that does not sell even at the tent sale... Our donations are sent world wide to orphanages in Nepal, Honduras, Mongolia and Africa. Within the United States, our donations have been made to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Boston inner city schools and libraries and the Woburn Council of Social Concern.

Bios

Jan Plourde, M.Ed., President and Co-Founder of The Learning Tree Store, spent the first 10 years of her professional career in early childhood education working with young children. Jan owned and operated First Friends Daycare in Beverly, MA, with her mother and mentor, Elizabeth Lewis (a.k.a. Nana) from 1981-1994. During this time, she spent a considerable amount of time searching for materials she needed to create the appropriate atmosphere in the program she was developing for young children -- which lead her to the founding of The Learning Tree Store.

Herb Plourde, Treasurer and Co-Founder of The Learning Tree Store, spent the first three years of his professional career as a teacher and Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal. Herb taught English, mathematics and science during this time, and continued his work in education over the next ten years. Herb officially joined the The Learning Tree Store in 1995, bringing analytical and technical expertise to the business along with his passion and experience in teaching.

Carol Hartery, full time early childhood educational consultant at The Learning Tree Store, is a major force behind the growth of the business and its further development in workshops, website and teacher tips. Carol has over 30 years experience as a home daycare provider, kindergarten teacher and workshop presenter.  She is an avid paper crafting enthusiast who continues to incorporate new discoveries and ideas into all of her workshops at The Learning Tree Store, Stoneham, MA.

    Sustainable Initiatives, Future

The Learning Tree Store has changed, evolved and continues to look for new ideas that will help our business, the customers and schools we service and the environment all grow together in a sustainable way. As a business, we are making strong efforts to make everyday EARTH DAY and reduce consumption by:

- offering a growing selection of sustainable and/or eco-friendly products

- offering 20% off on the 20th Day of the month in our stores to customers who bring their own shopping bags

 - offering The Learning Tree Store Publication, formerly a paper newsletter, in a newly designed tltree Web News digital format that is accessible on line, reducing printed copies

- using email to contact customers about free activities, store specials, events etc.

  - encouraging employees to reduce waste by recycling plastic bottles, paper, cardboard etc. and conserving office paper products with the use of travel containers for food storage.

-  forming community partnerships with a variety of local schools and several community organizations such as The Legacy of Teaching Institute, The Food Project North Shore of Lynn, MA and Advance Leadership Learning of Salem, MA.

- encouraging members of the community to shop locally and support jobs and businesses in the local economy
