An Addendum to "Leslie’s Retreat"

Alaskan April

by Celeste Egan

Whan that Aprille with its breakup due,

The ice of winter’s melted almost through,

To mire every road in such deep muck,

That soon entrenched may be our family truck.

Whan Zephirus also comes with gales unfurled

It’s just another challenge in our world.

We dodge the ruts, and round new pot holes skirt,

Yet can’t avoid much tracking in of dirt.

And soon returning terns will scream their wish,

For river ice to go, so they can fish.

All this weighs heavy hour after hour.

Thanne longen folk to really have the power

To figure taxes so they do not have to pay,

And hold a refund on that fifteenth day.

They’ll use that change to travel far and wide

So’s not at breakup time to here abide.

They’ll go away, enjoy, and have a fling

Where April’s warm and dry, and really spring.
