The Learning Tree Store is proud to offer four graduate courses in collaboration with the North East Consortium for Staff Development and Salem State College. The courses are practical in nature and pedagogy. The scope of the courses is designed to broaden teaching perspectives to help educational professionals include and teach learners of all styles and abilities. The setting is the air-conditioned classroom at The Learning Tree Store in Stoneham which is easily accessible from Routes I-93 and I-95. LTG101 Irlen Syndrome and The Brain

Become familiar with Irlen Syndrome and discover ways to integrate this remedial treatment method into your classroom. Explore noninvasive therapeutic strategies and methodologies that are based on neurological research. See how children with ADD/ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, dyslexia, PDD, headaches, reading difficulties and other neurologically-based difficulties can have their quality of life improved. Learn how to screen students for Irlen Syndrome by the end of this course.

This course is designed to provide both the inclusion teacher and the special educator with the basic tools and strategies to uncover and understand the causes and symptoms of some common learning disorders. The course has a focus on the needs of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Asperger Syndrome, and, depression. Participants will be presented with an overview of neurological characteristics that interfere with student performance. Presentations of some research based teaching strategies that support proactive, healthy, and productive learning environments are included

LTG103 Strategies for Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the General Education Classroom

This course provides an in depth overview of strategies, best practices and support for students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Emphasis is placed on educating the child in the general education classroom. Content areas include an introduction of autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration, the use of functional behavior analysis and positive behavior support programs, strategies for improving pragmatic language and social language skills, family considerations, and development of curriculum modifications. Special attention will be paid to developing strategies for reading comprehension and the facilitation of the writing process. Students will be exposed to the latest medical and educational research as it pertains to the causes and best practices for children with autism spectrum disorders.
LTG104 Integrating Technology into the Teaching and Learning of ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies in the "SMART" Classroom

This new course is designed to assist teachers in developing and enhancing skills in the meaningful integration of technology into instruction and the curriculum in language arts, math, science, and social studies. This course will focus on the development of student-centered learning opportunities that meet state standards and embed technology skills. Instruction will take place in a "SMART" classroom, where teachers will have the opportunity to learn how to use a SMART interactive whiteboard, an interactive response system, and a wireless slate. Teachers will have the opportunity to develop various technology-rich components for the courses they teach so that they can transform lessons and deliver curriculum in new and exciting ways. By focusing on only one content area in each class session, teachers will have the opportunity to investigate and utilize software and web resources specific to that subject area. Teachers will learn varied ways to incorporate state technology competencies into their teaching methods. By the end of this course, participants should be able to address the essential questions:
♦ How can we design curriculum in the content areas that develops student understanding of key curriculum standards?
♦ How can we integrate new technologies to enhance teaching and learning for understanding?
