Snowflake Book
Carol Hartery's Free Activity Tools
I am going to explain how to make a snowflake counting book with your child or with your class. You will need 9 sheets of 9" x 12" construction paper, a medium size gift bag that measures about 10" across when it is folded flat (hasn't been opened up yet) and is about 13" tall, a glue stick, scissors, a hole punch, 2 or 3 book rings, some white copy paper or coffee filters to use to make snowflakes, and the words to the rhyme. You will need at least 36 snowflakes which is why this is an ideal book to make with a class, but it can still be done at home if you and your child(ren) make the snowflakes together over a period of a couple of days. You will need to cut out 36 circles that can be a variety of sizes up to 4" and fold each of the circles into 6ths because snowflakes have 6 sides. To fold a circle into 6ths, first fold it in half. Then fold the half into thirds and when you open it up you should see 6 equal parts. Have your students or your child use their scissors to cut little "bites" out of each of the folded circles. When they have finished cutting "bites" and open up the circle they should see a snowflake. Cut along one side of the gift bag until you reach the bottom of the bag. Then cut around the bottom of the bag until you have cut the off the bottom. You should have one long strip of bag left. Fold it in half. This will be the back and front cover of your book. Use a 2 or 3 hole punch to punch holes in the sides of the gift bag and along one of the 9" sides of the 9 sheets of construction paper. Use the book rings to bind the book together. Print out the lyrics below . Cut and glue one of the lines from the rhyme onto each of the 9 pages in your book. Then glue one snowflake on the "One little snowflake" page, two snowflakes on the "Two little snowflakes" page and so on. Read the snowflake book with your students. Enjoy!
