3 Valentine Activities

Valentine's Day will soon be here and so I've put together three quick ideas that you can use. Click on the images to see the pdf  files that I have created. Illustrations and reproducibles for the activities are in the frame below.

Mini Book(pages 1-3)

Teachers often come into the store looking for books of reproducible mini books. Often those mini books are already illustrated so the students don't get to do much other than read the books. When I was in the classroom I preferred to have my students create their own illustrations so when I make books for the my trainings I often just put the text into the books.

For your students for this week I have created a Hearts mini book. All you need to do is print a copy of the book for each student in your class. The printable for page 3 has 4 pages that say, "MORE!!!" Each student only needs one copy of "MORE!!!!" so there are actually copies for students on that one page.

The book is chanted to the old familiar playground rhyme..., "One potato, two potato, three potato, four. Five Potato, six potato, seven potato, more."

Print and assemble the books for your students. They can use heart stickers, heart rubber stamps, fingerprints, or draw their own hearts to illustrate the book. Read the books together and then have your students take them home to share with their families for Valentine's Day...

Heart Bingo Song(pages 4-5)

"BINGO" is a song that most children are familiar with and so I decided to create a variation of that song for Valentine's day. The song is called "HEART" and is sung to the tune of "BINGO."

Print out one copy of the HEART page for each student. Print out one of the clapping hands strips for each student...there are 2 copies on each page. Fold the HEART page in half so that you can see the letters. Cut along the lines between each of the letters to create flaps that can be lifted. You are not cutting anything off. You are just creating flaps.

Glue a strip of clapping hands inside the HEART page so that when you lift a flap you will see some clapping hands.

Here's the song. The first time you sing it all of the flaps will be closed and you will just see the letters HEART.

There was a child who had a shape

And heart was its name, oh.

H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T,

And heart was its name, oh,

Before singing the second verse lift up the flap for the letter H. You should see one pair of clapping hands and the letters EART.

There was a child who had a shape

And heart was its name, oh.

Clap, E-A-R-T, Clap, E-A-R-T. Clap, E-A-R-T

And heart was its name, oh.

Continue lifting the flaps and singing as you would for the traditional "BINGO" song.

Heart Tracing Numbers pages(6-7)

One of the things that I loved most about teaching preschool and kindergarten children was how excited they were when I created a new chart or new game for them. Often I used the same format to change my apple game into a pumpkin game and my pumpkin game into a turkey game. The children had already been taught how to play the apple game so it was easy to learn the pumpkin game. The funniest part of it was that at least one of them would become all excited and tell me that it was a new game, but it was like the apple game except there were pumpkins this time. "Really?!" I would exclaim. "Wow, I didn't know that!"

Well, anyway some of your students problem still need to work on number formation so I have created a tracing activity that you can use for Valentine's Day or any time of year. You will want to make multiple copies of the Heart tracing page so that you have lots of them available. Or you may want to run the tracing pages off on tag, laminate them, and then have your students use a wipe off marker or crayon to trace the numbers.

Here's how to make the cube out of milk cartons....You will need two half gallon milk or juice cardboard cartons. Measure the bottom of the carton. It will be just under 4" wide. Cut each of the sides of the two cartons so that they are each 4" tall. Force one carton inside another to create a cube. Cover the cube with leftover bulletin board paper. Glue one each of the number cards from the Heart cube page onto each side of the cube. Laminate the cube by wrapping it with clear packing tape.

Your students will toss the heart cube and see which number comes out on top. They will trace that number on the recording sheet. Then they will toss the die again, seee which number comes out on top, and trace it. They will do this over and over again until all of one of the numbers has been traced.

Enjoy!
