Weather Book
Carol Hartery's Free Activity Tools
Hi Everyone! Today I thought I'd write about one of my
favorite CDs from Kimbo music, Leaping
Literacy. This CD was created by Dr.
Pam Schiller and features Don Monopoli of The Learning Station. Your
students can use rhythm sticks and ribbons with many of the songs on
this CD to help develop reading readiness skills.
I created my own ribbon sticks for each student. I purchased plastic shower hooks and rolls of inexpensive ribbon from a local craft store. Each ribbon stick took very little time to prepare because I just tied ribbon streamers to each shower hook. Since I wanted to use my ribbon sticks with some color songs from other CDs that I own, I tied just red ribbon streamers on some of the rings, and just blue, yellow or green on others. The lengths of the ribbon can vary, but should be long enough for the ribbon to get "caught in the air" as you wave it through the air. Instead of using rhythm sticks for some of the songs I chose to give each of my students a pointer. I use chopsticks for pointers, but hot glue something "fun" to the end of them. Sometimes I hot glue wooden cutouts that I purchase at craft stores. I have also used different shapes of plastic ice cubes by piercing a hole in the ice cube and then slipping the end of the chopstick into the hole I created. Pompoms, "porcupine balls", small party favors, etc. are among other objects that have found their way onto a chopstick.( Note to myself...take more pictures so that I have them for my blogs.) I have created an activity for "What's the Weather?" from the Leaping Literacy CD. You will find the reproducible and the instructions on The Learning Tree Store's activity pages. We have created 2 options for this activity. You can print out the page that lists all of the words that are spelled out in the song and have your students cut and glue one word onto each of 6 sheets of construction paper. Or you can print out the 6 individual pages with the words already on them. In both cases you will also want to print out the cover for the weather book that each student will be creating. Staple the cover and the 6 pages together to create one book for each student. On the first page have your students draw a picture of "Donny the Weatherman." On each of the "weather word" pages: sunny, rainy, snowy, and foggy, have them draw a sunny day scene or clothes they might wear on a sunny day. On the second "Donny" page have them draw Donny doing something in their favorite kind of weather. For example if the child loves to go swimming on a sunny day have them draw a picture of Donny swimming on a hot summer day. "What's the Weather?" is sung to the tune of "BINGO". Have your students use their pointers and their books to tap on each letter as it is sung in the song. Example: "D-O-N-N-Y, D-O-N-N-Y, D-O-N-N-Y" Donny the weatherman. Enjoy!
