Zoo Counting Game for Preschoolers
Carol Hartery's Free Activity Tools Carol's Reproducible Buttons Carol's Reproducible Fire Extinguisher For this activity you will need:
one zoo cages workmat for each playeranimal crackers or wild animal counters a number die 1,2,3 To make the die, print out the die page; then cut out the six faces and glue them on the cube. To make a true die, the 1 and 3's should be opposite each other. For the cubes, you can make them by cutting down two half-gallon cardboard containers down to about 3.75 inches each. Join the two cartons by placing the open end of one inside the open end of the other. Measure the bottom of the cartons and then adjust the joint so it matches. Tape the cartons together and you have a square. If you want to save time, you can buy 4" boxes at The Learning Tree Store. ![]() Each player will need a zoo cages workmat which can be printed from this site. Toss the number die, look at the number that comes up on top, and place that many animals in their cages. Only one animal goes in each cage. When a player has filled all of his cages, he has won the game. A variation of the game would be exact count where each cage is filled with no animals leftover. A third variation of the game start by having the children put an animal in each cage; then upon each dice roll they would take off the animals from the mat. In all cases you may want the children to say how many animals they have in total after each turn so you can informally assess their number sense. In the zoo workshop we also created a zoo animal quilt; click on the picture below to see it blown up on page 3 in the frame below. Enjoy!
